Linux on a laptop….

Windows is really starting to tick me off…

I’ve had an interest in converting my laptop from Windows to Linux for about as long as I can remember (or, more to the point, as long as I’ve had a laptop).  It appears now that this will be happening sooner rather than later.

The plan – as it stands right now – is to swap out the 500GB SSD that is currently in the laptop for another 500GB SSD that I’ve had laying around since I upgraded one of my other machines to a larger SSD.  This swapping will allow me to go back to Windows if I encounter issues with the Linux install.

Following that, I will be installing Ubuntu Desktop v22 onto the laptop and then covering my keyboard to protect it from all my drooling as I take it on a test drive.

All of this fun has the potential to begin as soon as today, but I’ve got plenty of time next Monday and Tuesday if I wish to wait that long since I am taking a couple days off work and making it a 4-day weekend.

So stay tuned, and I’ll try to temper my excitement during all the shenanigans.

Hope that works out, maybe I’ll do the same. Last time I tried I ran into too many driver issues, probably because of the particular laptop I was using. That’s been several versions (and laptops) ago though.

Gee, it must be nice having your own fancy website and all.

What happened to *your* fancy web site?

Installed Ubuntu on the laptop as planned and, other than having to tweak my bios settings a tiny bit, it’s been non-eventful. Now I’m learning what GUI-based Linux applications are available for certain tasks (Remmina for SSH/RDP, for example) and how to use them.

It would be nice if my Windows boxes (all one or two of them now) would show up in the “network neighborhood” on the linux box, but it sees all my other linux resources so it’s not all bad. Just something to work through.

Overall, I’m pretty happy with it so far.

Well I don’t know. I left town and right on cue everything hosed up. Best guess it’s “something” with my Verizon router, hopefully just needs rebooted. Never happened before. Everything seems to be working fine outbound from the house, just can’t get IN to anything. Maybe they finally pushed a firmware “upgrade.” It’ll give me something to look forward to when I get back.

I’ve never run Gentoo; I’ve got a huge knowledge investment in Ubuntu, however, and that’s pretty much what I run, so it doesn’t make much sense to me to deploy a flavor of L that I’ve never touched in a network that is otherwise Ubuntu.

I may, however, spin it up in a VM sometime to see what all the hub bub (real or perceived) is.

And, in closing, I must say that I’m simultaneously creeped out and proud that “strangers” are actually reading my content. Welcome aboard!
