Assorted Shenanigans, Summarized

There’s quite a few things going on around here…

Firstly, as previously eluded to, I received and installed the cable management solution I ordered on my 8-foot computer desk/table:

Delightful cable management goodness

I do enjoy having my cables away from my feet.

Got a lot of nerdy projects to provide updates/summaries on:

  • I have deployed the Technitium DNS server and it’s been running well for quite a while.  I don’t have everything pointed to it just yet, but I do have a subset of systems using it and so far, so good.  I still need to play with ad blocking and other such features.  We’ll see how it goes.
  • I *finally* got Immich to install and run as it should; it is a huge PITA to get running correctly, but I finally found the secret combination of configs to bring it to life.  I had it ingest all the photos and videos that reside on my NAS, and that took a couple days (!).  It has helped me greatly in identifying and cleaning up duplicates and things I don’t need or want any longer.
  • I have Grocy running but have not yet begun to use it; more to come on that shortly.
  • For the time being, I’ve decided I’m going to pass on standing up Matrix; rather than stand up yet another self-hosted solution, I’m going to see if I can route my notifications and such to my existing Nextcloud system by way of Nextcloud Talk.  I may also look into ntfy and just push notifications to my phone, although for some things (notably Plex), I like having a running log of notifications that I can currently reference in my existing Discord server, so we will see how it goes.  The goal is to get off of Discord and, in fact, the only server I’m still connected to is my own, so it should be relatively easy to distance myself from it once I get my notification issues worked out.
  • After repeatedly talking myself into and then out of it again, I’ve been half-heartedly investigating deploying some Ubiquiti gear in my network.  Turns out I can get most of what I’ve earmarked at my local MicroCenter.  Alas, the 24-port patch panel is currently unavailable there and is also sold out on the Ubiquiti web site.  It is a rather over-priced solution anyway; I’ve found a suitable patch panel on Amazon; it won’t match the Ubiquiti color scheme (gasp!) but it will come out being less expensive and labor-intensive, as it won’t require 24 individual keystones to be purchased and installed into it.

That’s about it for now!

I’d already had exposure to PiHole and just wanted to try something different. Not sure I’ve ever dealt with AdGuard Home, I may have to look into it. Technitium is pretty cool thus far, however.

By the way, I’d like to mention that updates to your blog are sorely lacking. You probably already knew that though :-).
